One could almost say Lost & Hidden Items is based on an extra-musical script: An imaginary and almost autobiographical adventure, built with memories of extreme vital moments. But this script only served as a stimulus in the process of making the play, and the intention was not to create self-explanatory Programmmusik, (for this reason the "working titles" of the scenes are not disclosed). However, the work -like a carpet, hand-sewn- contains a large number of "concrète elements" - not always processed - that, even appearing in new environments, are revealed, allowing each listener to create their own "film".
There are eight parts-scenes set, and sometimes superimposed, with durations ranging between 20 seconds and 4 minutes, interrelated through thematic and timbral “exchanges”, ties of the “secret program.” Empirical processes dominate, always supervised by the ear, as well as tactics inspired by cinematic techniques.
There are "soundscapes" type scenes, some quite violent; others - more or less - chaotic, minimalist and / or repetitive.
Not only the provenance of the sound material, but also certain editing and processing techniques, and compositional strategies can evoke memories of old musique concrète.
Much of the "base material" is recordings of ritual music, urban settings, birdsong, multiple voices from a melting pot of languages, improvisations in Muslim tombs, etc. recorded over eight months between 1997 and 1998- in which Markus Breuss traveled through Assam, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Orissa ... (India).
Lost & hidden items was prepared at the LIEM-CDMC, and in the author's study, between 1997 and 1999.
